2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. However, their popularity has markedly increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a detailed review into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat apparent elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the explosion in gaming seems especially powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs offer natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the showcased games directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.

Should these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we might just be entering a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
