United Nations Lifts Penalties on President of Syria Prior to White House Visit

Security Council representatives approved to an American proposal to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his Washington trip next week.

Sharaa was named transitional president after leading an insurgent campaign that removed the previous leader in the final month of 2024, ending over a decade of civil war.

The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.

He had been subject to UN sanctions while commanding the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with al-Qaeda. America delisted HTS from a list of global extremist entities during July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks toward America and supportive states for their support the country and its population."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

President Sharaa's presidential meeting on Monday comes after President Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump remarked the Syrian leader possessed "a genuine opportunity for national reconciliation".

The pair met initially this past May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through Arab nations.

After that meeting, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country prior to breaking relations in 2016.

Previous US Visit

This week's diplomatic engagement is not Sharaa's first trip to America this year. This past fall, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the United Nations gathering in Manhattan for nearly six decades.

Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
